The sequence contains an unusually high proportion of proline and glycine, which limits regular secondary structure and contributes to solubility in aqueous media. The compound dissolves readily in water and in normal saline. Because it is a peptide, digestive enzymes are expected to break it down if it is swallowed, a consideration that influences the routes of administration used in animal experiments. Detailed conformational data remain limited, and published structural models are largely computational.
BPC 157 is a synthetic peptide built from fifteen amino acids. The letters stand for body protection compound, and the number is a laboratory code rather than a description of any biological feature. Its single-letter sequence is GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, which corresponds to a calculated mass near 1419.5 daltons. The material is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis and is distributed as a lyophilized powder, not as a purified extract from a natural source.
Early work on this family of molecules examined fractions of human gastric juice, where a larger protein was reported to protect gastrointestinal tissue in animal models. BPC 157 was designed as a shorter, more stable fragment of that protein and then studied on its own. The peptide itself is not a normal dietary component and is not present in the human body in meaningful quantities. Descriptions of its origin therefore refer to the research lineage of a laboratory molecule rather than to an endogenous or nutritional substance.
Most early work on this peptide originated in the 1990s from a research group in Zagreb, Croatia, relying on animal models and cell cultures. Reported observations included effects on gastrointestinal lesion healing, tendon fibroblast migration, and blood vessel formation under controlled laboratory conditions. These findings come predominantly from rodent studies and in vitro assays rather than from human trials. Controlled human data remain limited, and the degree to which animal results translate to human physiology is an open question rather than a settled fact.
Within the research literature, the peptide is discussed through several provisional mechanisms, including cytoprotection, modulation of growth factor signaling, and interaction with the nitric oxide system. None of these mechanisms is fully characterized, and no single pathway is universally accepted. Review articles typically note the gap between consistent animal findings and sparse human evidence. The compound is classified as a research chemical rather than an approved pharmaceutical, which shapes how studies are designed, funded, and reported.

Proposed mechanisms include interaction with the nitric oxide system, modulation of growth factor signaling, and effects on blood vessel formation. None of these has been established as the primary mode of action, and some proposed pathways rest on indirect measurements. Whether the reported effects depend on a specific receptor has not been determined. Stability in gastric acid, unusual for a peptide of this size, is also reported in animal work, but the reason for it is not firmly established.
Published studies on BPC-157 are dominated by animal models. Commonly used endpoints include healing of surgically induced lesions in the stomach, tendon-to-bone attachment after transection, and recovery from experimentally induced vascular or intestinal damage. Many of these reports come from a small number of research groups, and the peptide is often described as acting across a wide range of tissue types. That breadth is itself a point of discussion, since one molecule influencing many unrelated systems is unusual.
Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the activity observed in animal models. The most frequently cited involve signaling through vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 and modulation of the nitric oxide system. Researchers have also described interactions with protective pathways in the gut lining. These proposed mechanisms appear in the literature as hypotheses supported by preclinical observations, not as confirmed pathways in humans. The precise way the peptide produces its reported effects, and whether those effects carry across species, remain areas of active and unresolved investigation.
BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide, meaning it consists of fifteen amino acids joined in a single chain. Its sequence is Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val, a fragment corresponding to part of a larger protein found in human gastric juice. The peptide was first described in the 1990s by researchers in Zagreb who were studying gastric protective factors. It is not a naturally circulating hormone; it is a laboratory-made fragment derived from a stomach protein. The name is an abbreviation of body protection compound, with the number referring to the fragment's position in the source protein.
Fat storage – marrow adipose tissue (MAT) acts as a storage reserve of fatty acids. Acid-base balance – bone buffers the blood against excessive pH changes by absorbing or releasing alkaline salts. Detoxification – bone tissues can also store heavy metals and other foreign elements, removing them from the blood and reducing their effects on other tissues. These can later be gradually released for excretion. Endocrine organ – bone controls phosphate metabolism by releasing fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23), which acts on kidneys to reduce phosphate reabsorption. Bone cells also release a hormone called osteocalcin, which contributes to the regulation of blood sugar (glucose) and fat deposition. Osteocalcin increases both the insulin secretion and sensitivity, in addition to boosting the number of insulin-producing cells and reducing stores of fat. Calcium balance – the process of bone resorption by the osteoclasts releases stored calcium into the systemic circulation and is an important process in regulating calcium balance. As bone formation actively fixes circulating calcium in its mineral form, removing it from the bloodstream, resorption actively unfixes it thereby increasing circulating calcium levels. These processes occur in tandem at site-specific locations.
=== Mechanism of action === The mechanism of action of methocarbamol in humans has not been conclusively established. Its effect is thought to be localized to the central nervous system rather than a direct effect on skeletal muscles. It does not affect the motor end plate or the peripheral nerve fiber. The efficacy of the medication is likely related to its sedative effect. It has been shown in animal studies to act as a blocker of Nav1.4 voltage-gated sodium channels, but this may not be its only target.
=== Planning and decision-making === An "agent" is any entity (artificial or not) that perceives and takes actions in the world. A rational agent has goals or preferences and takes actions to make them happen. In automated planning, the agent has a specific goal. In automated decision-making, the agent has preferences—there are some situations it would prefer to be in, and some situations it is trying to avoid. The decision-making agent assigns a number to each situation (called its "utility") that measures how much the agent prefers it. For each possible action, it can calculate the "expected utility": the utility of all possible outcomes of the action, weighted by the probability that the outcome will occur. It can then choose the action with the maximum expected utility. In classical planning, the agent knows exactly what the effect of any action will be. In most real-world problems, however, the agent may not understand its current situation with certainty (it is "unknown" or "unobservable") and it may not know for certain what will happen after each possible action (it is not "deterministic"). It must choose an action by making a probabilistic guess and then reassess the situation to see if the action had the desired effect. Alongside thorough testing and improvement based on previous decisions, having an explanation for why the agent took certain decisions is a way to build trust, especially when the decisions have to be relied upon. In some problems, the agent's preferences may be uncertain, especially if there are other agents or humans involved.
== The Journey to South America == On 5 June 1799, the Pizarro departed from the port of La Coruña after a period of delay caused by unfavorable weather. The ship, commanded by Captain Cagigal, left in the early afternoon and encountered difficulties navigating the harbor due to contrary winds, nearly running aground before eventually clearing the port. The vessel passed Castle San Antonio and the Tower of Hercules by the evening, then altered its course to avoid a British naval squadron operating offshore, a precaution necessitated by ongoing hostilities and blockades associated with the European wars of the period. Spain, originally allied with Britain and other monarchies against revolutionary France, had made peace with France in 1795. If the Pizarro had been captured at sea, the ship would likely have been taken to Portugal, a British ally, resulting in the loss of passage for the expedition’s civilian passengers to the New World. During the voyage, Humboldt and Bonpland initiated scientific work, including the use of a dip needle to measure the Earth’s magnetic inclination and water-temperature readings, confirming previous observations by Franklin and Williams regarding ocean temperatures. The Pizarro sailed past Cape Finisterre and, on 8 June 1799, encountered an English squadron along the coast, prompting a change in course. The ship continued past Cape St. Vincent, a historic site for European maritime exploration. On 11 June 1799, the ship observed a large school of jellyfish in the Atlantic.

==== Illegal marketing of Rapamune settlement (2014) ==== A "whistleblower suit" was filed in 2005 against Wyeth, which was acquired by Pfizer in 2009, alleging that the company illegally marketed sirolimus (Rapamune) for off-label uses, targeted specific doctors and medical facilities to increase sales of Rapamune, tried to get transplant patients to change from their transplant drugs to Rapamune, and specifically targeted African Americans. According to the whistleblowers, Wyeth also provided doctors and hospitals that prescribed the drug with kickbacks such as grants, donations, and other money. In 2013, the company pleaded guilty to criminal mis-branding violations under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. By August 2014, it had paid $491 million in civil and criminal penalties related to Rapamune.
GnRH antagonists are also used for short periods in the prevention of premature LH surge and endogenous ovulation in patients undergoing ovarian hyperstimulation with FSH in preparation for in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Typically they are administered in the mid-follicular phase in stimulated cycles after administration of gonadotropins and prior to the administration of hCG – which is given to stimulate ovulation. This protocol is likely beneficial in women expected to be hyper-responders, and probably also those expected to be poor responders to ovarian hyperstimulation. There is probably little or no difference between GnRH antagonist and GnRH agonist protocols in terms of live birth or risk of miscarriage but GnRH antagonists probably reduce the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. The GnRH antagonists that are currently licensed for use in fertility treatment are cetrorelix and ganirelix.
Towards the end of its existence, the Bophuthatswana Defence Force (BDF) had an estimated number of 4,000 troops, mostly infantry. It was organized into six military regions, and its ground forces included two infantry battalions, possessing two armoured personnel carriers. The Bophuthatswana Air Force of 150 personnel possessed three combat aircraft and two armed helicopters. The president was commander-in-chief and was authorised to deploy the armed forces in both cross-border operations as well as domestically. During its last days in 1994, the Bophuthatswana Police had 6,002 police officers, operating from 56 police stations throughout the territory. With the dissolution of Bophuthatswana in 1994, the BDF and the Bophuthatswana Police were incorporated into the South African National Defence Force and the South African Police Service, respectively.
=== Metabolism === B. canis functions as a chemoorganotroph, deriving energy from the oxidation of organic compounds and utilizing organic electron sources. Studies indicate that B. canis, like other Brucella species, shares a conserved metabolic architecture within the genus. This includes a lack of phosphofructokinase (PFK), an enzyme required for the Embden–Meyerhof–Parnas (EMP) pathway (classical glycolysis). Instead, glucose catabolism is accomplished using the pentose phosphate pathway. While select Brucella species can also rely on a functional Entner–Doudoroff pathway, this pathway is not functional in most Brucella species, including B. canis, due to inactivating mutations. B. canis also possesses a complete tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, which primarily utilizes oxygen as its terminal electron acceptor within its electron transport chain. In anaerobic conditions, nitrate can also function as a terminal electron acceptor because B. canis is capable of producing nitrate reductase. B. canis also exhibits strong urease activity, producing the enzyme urease to hydrolyze urea into ammonia and carbon dioxide. This enzymatic activity is relevant for its role in nitrogen acquisition and as a notable virulence factor, as it helps to neutralize and facilitate survival within surrounding acidic environments. For laboratory identification, a relevant metabolic characteristic of B. canis is that it does not require supplemental CO2 for growth, unlike some other Brucella species. Additionally, B.

== Regulation == There are many mechanisms that exist to regulate the expression of system Xc-, although it is not the sole determinant of extracellular glutamate or intracellular glutathione. An example is amino acid deprivation, which triggers up regulation of the transporter. A key regulator is extracellular glutamate; when it becomes excessive, it goes from an excitatory transmitter to an excitotoxin. The inhibition of uptake of extracellular cystine into cells leads to decreased levels of intracellular glutathione which leads to ferroptosis. This regulation may be done through Excitatory Amino Acid Transporters (EAATs), which decrease extracellular glutamate and increase intracellular glutamate in astrocytes. When looking at its structure, xCT seems to be the main determinant for the system's activity. Glutamate and cystine can be transported in both directions, but, generally, more cystine is imported and more glutamate is exported. Extracellular glutamate acts as a competitive inhibitor for cystine uptake via system Xc-.

Fossil deposits indicate the amiiforms included freshwater and marine species that were once widely distributed in North America, South America, Eurasia, and Africa. Today, the two species of Amia are the only remaining species in the order Amiiformes; they are demersal, freshwater piscivores, and their range is restricted to freshwater environments in North America, including much of the Eastern United States and adjacent southern Canada from the St. Lawrence River and Lake Champlain drainage of southern Ontario and Quebec westward around the Great Lakes in southern Ontario into Minnesota. Historically, their distribution in North America included the drainage basins of the Mississippi River from Quebec to northern Minnesota, the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes, including Georgian Bay, Lake Nipissing, and Simcoe, Ontario, south to the Gulf of Mexico; Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain from the Susquehanna River drainage in southeastern Pennsylvania to the Colorado River in Texas.
In it Adorno not only deviated from the theoretical program Horkheimer had laid out a year earlier but also challenged philosophy's very capacity for comprehending reality as such: "For the mind," Adorno announced, "is indeed not capable of producing or grasping the totality of the real, but it may be possible to penetrate the detail, to explode in miniature the mass of merely existing reality." In line with Benjamin's The Origin of German Tragic Drama and preliminary sketches of the Arcades Project, Adorno likened philosophical interpretation to experiments that should be conducted "until they arrive at figurations in which the answers are legible, while the questions themselves vanish." Having lost its position as the Queen of the Sciences, philosophy must now radically transform its approach to objects so that it might "construct keys before which reality springs open." Following Horkheimer's taking up the directorship of the Institute, a new journal, Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung, was produced to publish the research of Institute members both before and after its relocation to the United States. Though Adorno was not an Institute member, the journal published many of his essays, including "The Social Situation of Music" (1932), "On Jazz" (1936), "On the Fetish-Character in Music and the Regression of Listening" (1938), and "Fragments on Wagner" (1938).
Secondary aromatic amines: These are less hindered than hindered phenols, which can make them more reactive. Hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS): Unlike other primary antioxidants, HALS scavenge free radicals generated during photo-oxidation, thus protecting the polymer material from UV radiation. Secondary antioxidants act to decompose peroxides (ROOH) into non-radical products, thus preventing further generation of free radicals, and contributing to the overall oxidative stability of the polymer. Often used in combination with phenolic antioxidants for synergistic effects. Phosphites: Example: tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl)phosphite. Thiosynergists: Most of this class are "thio-ethers" (not to be confused with thioesters): an ester of 3,3-thiodipropionic acid. Other organic sulfide (R1-S-R2) compounds also have a similar effect. Radical scavengers: scavenge free radicals to halt the chain reaction. This can be any radical in the oxidation cycle (R•, ROO•, RO•, •OH), though in practice RO• and •OH are too reactive to "trap". Common types include lactones (esp. substituted benzofuranone) and acrylated bis-phenols.

It is a synthetic peptide. Its design was inspired by a fragment of a protein found in human gastric juice, but the fifteen-amino-acid molecule itself is made in a laboratory and is not a normal component of food or of human tissue in appreciable amounts.
The number is an internal laboratory designation from the research group that first described the fragment. It does not encode a molecular weight, a receptor target, or a measured biological effect, and it carries no meaning outside the naming history of the compound.
It contains fifteen amino acid residues and has a calculated mass of roughly 1419.5 daltons. That places it in the short-peptide range, well below the size of small proteins, which affects how it is synthesized, purified, and analyzed.
The sequence corresponds to a fragment of a protein found in human gastric juice, so related sequences are natural. The isolated fifteen-amino-acid peptide supplied for research is produced synthetically. Whether the free fragment circulates naturally in humans has not been settled.
